Red Telephone Box Door Tutorial

It is so nice to be surrounded by creative people; being inspired and motivated to make a better and more beautiful environment.

That is why; this blog post features one of our most creative friends who (unfortunately) doesn't have a blog yet to spread her creative works.

So without further ado, let me introduce you to Bunga Yuniasari, a 27 years old civil engineer.

Bunga was our high school friend with charming personality and creative traits. We haven't got much chance to enjoy her works until she shared a picture of her latest project, Red Telephone Box Door on her Facebook.

So we begged her to share the tutorial here to learn on the process and be inspired with overflowing ideas for this project.

This is what she said about her project:

"London is one of my favorite European cities. I love their architectural designs, cultures, arts with complicated details, and other uniqueness."

And since her nieces love One Direction which happen to be one of the British Boy bands, she decided to make a sweet surprise for them. By turning their bedroom door into a Red Telephone Box Door just like the one showed at One Direction's cover album.

Here is how she made it:

First step

Create the design. What you need to do is measuring the current door that you are about to make over. After that, start by making a sketch before creating a well scaled design.

This stage is necessary since you will need to print "TELEPHONE" stencil with the correct size to be transferred onto the Telephone Box Door design.

For the "TELEPHONE" word, use font "DHKai-SB" and adjust the size according to your door's measurement.

Print also a picture of British Crown to be cut as a stencil above the "TELEPHONE" word.

Second Step

Prepare the tools. Since this was supposed to be a surprise, Bunga has only a few hours during the nieces' school hours to finish everything. This is why; she has to prepare everything carefully for an efficient work.
Here are the tools that you'll need for this project.

- The Red Telephone Box Door design.
- "TELEPHONE" and British Crown stencils.
- long ruler and other measuring tools.
- scissors
- cutter
- adhesive tape
- paper tape
- pencil
- markers/sharpie
- red paint
- white paint
- tinner
- old newspapers n tablecloth
- middle sized paint brush
- small sized paint brush

Third Step

Measuring and marking the door. Take notes or check your printed door design and don't forget to mark them carefully with pencil.
If your door doesn't have any panels, you will need to draw the boxes to create the "glass window".
Draw the basic shape of the telephone box (the side lines and curved lines on top).
Make marks for the "T E L E P H O N E" letters.
Make mark for the British Crown location.
Make sure that all of the stencils are fitted above the door.

Now you are ready to start the painting process and don't forget to cover the floor with old newspapers.

Forth Step

Start the painting process by brushing the red paint going up from bellow. Paint the main body of the "telephone box" without the "window panels". Quick tips: use the small brush for the corner area for a smooth finish.

Let the pain dry for 2 hours (you will need a fan to speed up this process). Meanwhile, you can start to cut the stencils with cutter.

Now as the red paint is dried, you can start to paint the upper part with white paint as the base of the "T E L E P H O N E" letters.

Move to the panels to create the "glass window" by painting them white. Don't forget to use the smaller brush for the sides to minimize the risk of stains on the red painted parts.

Fifth Step

Applying the "T E L E P H O N E" stencils. It will be easier to print them at once and apply the arranged letters to the upper side of the door, but if you apply the letters separately, make sure to start from the middle letter like this:
P -> EPH -> LEPHO -> ELEPHON -> TELEPHONE
This way the final result will be perfectly fitted in the middle of the telephone box door.

The same thing goes for the "British crown" stencil. For an easier way, you can just use a black marker or sharpie on it.

The adhesive tape will be very helpful to keep the stencils on place for this process.

For finishing, you can start to draw lines to create a 3D effects on the surface.

This is the finished result.

Her nieces was overjoyed when they found out the "Red Telephone Box Door" after school.

And when I ask, Does it worth the hard efforts? Bunga said, "Definitely!"
